Yau Yau | Chief Editor and Founder of new digital media platform - The Spiritual Value of the Arts and Culture Sector

iCompass is a new media platform founded in June earlier this year. One of the founders, Yau Yau, shared their thoughts on starting a new online media at this time of social unrest in Hong Kong.

Watching what has been happening in the world and society, I hope that before people take a stand for a viewpoint and make judgements, they have the capability to distinguish between good and evil.

‘iCompass’ is a new digital media platform we set up this June. The inspiration for the name ‘iCompass’ comes from ‘i’ representing intelligence, and ‘Compass’, as the name suggests, is a compass guiding people’s way. We have a slogan called ‘Guide the field of intelligence’ as we hope to build an informational platform full of knowledge to inspire the readers’ thoughts and to broaden the depth of their mind. This is our belief in iCompass.

Our team is made up of a few young people in their 20s and 30s. We are driven youth who share the duties of editing, administration, designing, photography, videography, online promotion, activity coordination, etc., along with managing our website and our social media page. I’ve heard from a lot of seniors in the industry that you can’t make any money from the media business and even that losing capital is a given, yet I still believe that developing the arts and culture sector has a spiritual value and is something worth the persistence. With the ideals of ‘promoting arts and culture’ and ‘saving Hong Kong through arts and culture’, we founded iCompass.

iCompass’ digital media platform is currently divided into three categories: ‘Investments’, ‘Lifestyle’ and ‘Literature and Art’. We invite experts from different fields to write and share columns on different topics. The sociology lecturer Dr Lai Ming, the famous lyricist Mr Leung Pak Kin and author Mr Ngan Shun Kau are all on the list of people that have been invited to submit articles.

Watching what has been happening in the world and society, I hope that before people take a stand for a viewpoint and make judgements, they have the capability to distinguish between good and evil. iCompass carries the important mission of presenting the truth. For example, we previously created a ‘100 Days of Anti-ELAB Special Issue’ after doing fine and detailed research on the social movement in the past months. We hope to truthfully restore all the events that have happened in Hong Kong, to record the formation of this massive social movement from its first to hundredth day, and to leave Hong Kong with a most genuine record of events. Recently, we also released the translated English version so that foreigners can learn and understand the details of this event.

In the future, we will continuously invite columnists of different fields to join the platform of iCompass to present diverse viewpoints and analysis to our readers. We are also considering the development of a membership system. Besides releasing free articles to our readers, we will also regularly organize different types of academic and cultural exchange activities with the arts as one of the main focuses. Not everyone in Hong Kong has a deep understanding of arts and culture which is why we hope to do our part in promoting it. Other than that, iCompass will create high quality content to give our readers a chance to communicate with different experts through platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and our YouTube channel.

Our young staff members are all participating in this project on a volunteer basis and since being set up a few months ago, iCompass is gradually moving onto the right track. Although we have no backing from large organisations or companies, we still run as an independent media platform and we hope to forge our own path with our production quality and communicative power. While Hong Kong’s future remains unclear, I hope that iCompass and all artists and cultural workers can provide a space for thinking and act as a guide for readers.
